Because the Patriot is intended for at least moderate off-road chores, two full-time four-wheel-drive systems are available with the 2.4-liter engine: Freedom Drive I, or Freedom Drive II. The second version uses a different gearset, to provide a lower simulated "first-gear" ratio in the CVT.

Jeep boasts that the Patriot's approach, departure and breakover angles are "best in class." Tow hooks and Hill Descent Control, for assistance in rougher terrain, are available in the Freedom Drive II Off-Road option package. Sport models ride on 16-inch steel wheels, while the Limited gets 17-inch aluminum wheels.

Five passengers fit inside the Patriot. Curtain-type airbags with electronic roll mitigation are standard, along with antilock braking, and an Electronic Stability Program. Simple to drive, the Patriot maneuvers well enough. Though quick-reacting, with a rather tight turning circle, the appropriately-assisted steering gets a bit vague at times, Still, little correction is needed on the highway.

Mounted on the forward console, the manual-shift lever for non-CVT Patriots is somewhat vague, but that gearbox yields more spirited responses.

Overall, the Patriot behaves and handles more like a car, but it does have a bit of truck-like sound. Telltale noises, slight but reminiscent of older Chrysler products, signal that insulation could be better. There's definite stiffness to the suspension, which helps a Patriot react immediately (if curtly) to bumps, while maintaining control. Trouble spots pass before you know it, even if some jolting results. Hill Descent Control works effectively off-road, though it can become annoyingly overactive.

Entry/exit is easy, front and rear; though the doorsill is rather tall. Reasonably long front seat bottoms and soft seatbacks offer comfortable accommodations. The far-off windshield helps make the interior seem more spacious. Headroom is quite ample with plenty of elbow space for the driver. The backseat is comfortable for two and passable for a third, except for the need to straddle the cupholder console. Hollowed-out front seatbacks help rear leg space, and toe room is huge. Wide B- and C-pillars don't impair over-shoulder views, and the relatively tall hood is welcome as a guide to the road ahead.

Patriot prices start at $18,170 (destination charge included) for a front-drive Sport model. The Limited stickers for $22,860. All-wheel drive adds $1,750, and the CVT costs as much as $1,100 extra. A Rocky Mountain Edition option package for 2009 includes a sunroof and monochrome paint.

The Power of Camaro Drag Racer

When making modifications to cars, especially muscle cars that are oriented to straight line acceleration and speed, most people will add power first. With what I call my stage one modifications to my camaro drag racer project car, I added power, and that is basically it. There are some negatives to doing it this way. First and foremost, and also requiring a lot of effort and money to correct, is that the stock drivetrain really isn't that strong. It just isn't built to handle the 470 horsepower and torque that my engine is making. Secondly, there are handling issues related to suspension and braking.

What does all of this mean for my project camaro drag racer? Basically it means that I have a bunch of power that I can't use. The weak drivetrain is likely the more pressing issue. The suspension leads to body roll, and costs me some traction on launches. However, these aren't new issues, in fact thanks to the sub frame connector I had welded in when I got the power upgrades, the car handles better now than before. The drivetrain issues can possibly leave you stranded on the side of the road. There are plenty of people who've blown their rear ends with less power than I have in these cars.

Right now, the clutch is the weak point of my drivetrain. With the tires headed up, the clutch will slip if I try a hard launch. When shifting into second under hard acceleration, the clutch slips occarionally. With more than 65,000 miles on it, and never having been built to handle this level of power to being with, this is to be expected from the original factory clutch.

Keeping the slipping clutch in there is a decision I made with the idea to protect the rear differential, which as I've said before isn't strong enough to handle the power running through it. These rears have been known to break under basically stock power when launched with drag radials on the car. I'd certainly prefer a slipping clutch than a broken differential. I can still drive the car with a slipping clutch; I can't with a broken ring gear.

The fix to these is upgrading to a Moser or Strange 12 bolt rear, which also lets me put in steeper gears. The choice for me would be to move from my stock 3.42 ratio to 4.10, which will give the car even better acceleration. This will certainly necessitate a new clutch. There are many brands out there, and each has their people who either like or dislike them.

Choosing to upgrade the power of my camaro drag racer was, I believe the right choice, and I would make it again. The car is certainly more enjoyable to drive; and the compliments I get on the sound are nice too. Plus, under normal driving circumstances on the street, the drivetrain issues aren't particularly problematic.

This are the list for six midsized sedans and found none of their bumpers held up well in the kinds of low-speed impacts bumpers.

The 2010 Mitsubishi Triton

On the back of unprecedented sales throughout 2009, Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) has announced details of its 2010 model year Triton utility line-up. The 2010 Triton offers a new, high powered turbo-diesel engine with class leading power, industry-leading safety standards including stability control and side and curtain airbags available on diesel dual-cab models, greater towing capacity, and an extended tray.

At the official vehicle preview today, Robert McEniry, President and CEO of MMAL, said the company had decided to release details of the new vehicle early as strong demand for the current model had seen stocks quickly disappearing from Mitsubishi dealerships in the last few months.

"Triton is one of the mainstays of the Mitsubishi range and has always proved popular as a practical and rugged work vehicle that can take all the hard knocks thrown at it," McEniry said. "And, more recently, its recognised four-wheel drive capabilities and car-like comforts have seen it used for recreational activities as well.

"The result is that this car is in great demand - so much so that June sales were the highest monthly sales ever recorded for Triton in this country, and now our stocks are running low. In light of this, we have decided to release details of the new 2010 Triton early, to let prospective buyers know just what a great vehicle we have in store for them."

The big news for the 2010 Triton range is the availability of a new, high-powered (HP) turbo diesel engine on four-wheel drive variants, which delivers the highest output and performance in this segment. This 2.5-litre powerplant generates 131 kW of power at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 2,000 rpm - up 11 per cent and 17 per cent respectively over the previous 4M41 3.2-litre engine - and delivers combined fuel economy figures of 8.3 litres per 100 km, a 9 per cent improvement, when mated to a manual transmission. Automatic variants generate a similar amount of power, 350Nm of torque, and achieve a combined fuel economy figure of 9.3 litres per 100 km.

These enhanced figures have been achieved by improving engine performance through changes to the combustion chamber shape, optimized injector specifications, adding a variable geometry turbo charger and increasing turbo charging pressure.

The two-wheel drive 2010 Triton range retains the popular 2.4-litre petrol engine and 2.5-litre diesel engine from the current line-up. The petrol engine generates 94kW of power @ 5250 rpm and 194 Nm of torque @ 4000 rpm, offers economical fuel consumption figures of 10.9 litres per 100 km and is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. The diesel engine generates 100 kW @ 3800 rpm and 314 Nm @ 2,000 rpm, and returns economy figures of 8.2- (manual) and 8.6- (automatic) litres per 100 kilometres.

Two automatic transmissions are available on HP diesel variants - the four-speed transmission carried over from the previous model sees smooth shifting as an option on all but the top-of-the-range Triton. The well appointed GLX-R model receives an electronically controlled five-speed automatic with sports-mode which provides operational improvement, performance improvement, and CO2 emission reduction.

Mitsubishi's All Terrain Technology (MATT) is standard on all GLX-R models, and features the acclaimed Super Select four-wheel drive system, which includes Active Stability & Traction Control, Multi Mode ABS, Electronic Brake Force Distribution and an optional Diff Lock.

Given many Mitsubishi Tritons spend their weekdays toiling as an indispensible tool for their hard-working owners - then convert to family transport on weekends - safety was a key priority when designing the new vehicle. All 2010 Tritons have standard driver and front passenger SRS airbags, front and rear door impact bars, ABS brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, front seatbelt pretensioners and child restraint points.

Additional safety features available with the 2010 Mitsubishi Triton line-up confirm its position as the class-leader in this segment. Active stability and traction control is available on all HP diesel models and passenger side and curtain airbags are available on all HP diesel dual-cab models - and standard on GLX-R variants - and cement the Triton's four star ANCAP rating.

Load carrying and towing are critical factors when choosing a work-and-play utility, and, in response to consumer feedback, Mitsubishi has gone all-out to improve both these important features on the 2010 Triton. The new, long-bed tray available on dual-cab Tritons offers a total tray length of 1505 mm, and total tray height of 460 mm - an improvement in both directions of 14 per cent, perfect for sliding larger objects smoothly onto the utility bed.

Towing capacities have also been increased, with the maximum towing capacity of the 2010 Triton four-wheel drive range up from 2,500 kg to 2,700 kg on our dual-cab four-by-fours with long bed and 3,000 kg on all other four-wheel drives.

The 2010 Triton model range presents a clearer decision process for the consumer, with eight two-wheel drive variants - the petrol powered manual GL cab chassis and GLX dual-cab, and automatic or manual diesel powered GLX cab chassis and dual-cab and GL-R dual-cab. The new HP 2.5-litre engine is available on four-wheel drive models in either manual or automatic transmissions in GLX single-cabs and dual-cabs, GL-R dual-cabs or GLX-R dual-cabs (see attached table).

Along with the enhanced rugged styling the long-bed tray brings to selected variants in the 2010 Triton, exterior features have been upgraded with new front bumpers, grille and side-turning lamps, while inside, new seat fabric and seat pads, available sports seats and new instrument cluster, floor console treatments, along with a new sound system, increase the vehicle's intrinsic comfort for both driver and passenger.

Central purchasing decision criteria in the commercial vehicle market are maintenance and running costs, and the 2010 Triton line-up leads the pack with its comprehensive five year/130,000 whole vehicle warranty, backed up by its 10 year/160,000 km powertrain warranty and a five year/unlimited kilometre roadside assistance package.

Pricing for the new 2010 Triton range is yet to be revealed; however, Mitsubishi has indicated that there will be no "sticker shock" associated with the comprehensive upgrade in features this vehicle represents.

"The new Triton answers all the questions our owners have asked of us. While they appreciated its unique styling and recognised four-wheel drive ability, they wanted a more rugged looking vehicle, with class-leading diesel power, industry leading safety features and greater carrying capacity," McEniry said.

"And the 2010 Triton delivers on all accounts."

The Saab 9-3 Vector Convertible

Nothing, but nothing can beat the unmatchable feeling of zipping along with the wind in your hair and the sun on your face, countryside flying by as you cut a dash down sweeping lanes and winding roads. If you've never had the pleasure of a convertible car, then I implore you to at least borrow one for a spell, but be warned! Once you've tasted the unforgettable feeling of freedom that it brings, you might find yourself unwilling to give it back.

If you haven't guessed, I love convertibles. I don't think that I could buy a car that had a static roof, because after years of being able to go topless it would feel unnaturally claustrophobic. I'd be out there with my tin opener without a thought for the consequences if I was forced to have a standard model.

Fortunately I don't have to worry about fitting a family into my vehicle, and I'm aware that that's a big bonus when it comes to the freedom of being able to choose whatever car model I want. Some people are not so fortunate and have to think of practicality before their own desires, but there is a way that these desires can be realised!

I found a wonderful used Saab 9-3 Vector convertible at an unbeatable price, and frankly if I had a family car then I wouldn't hesitate to make this my second vehicle. It's spacious, elegant and cuts a dash wherever you choose to take it, so whether you're heading into town or travelling on the motorway you can be assured of a fabulous performance.

The summer has been all the more enjoyable since I got my used Saab. It's simply one of the most gorgeous cars that I've ever had, and I would recommend a used Saab model to anyone!

The Mitsubishi Lancer GS3

Mitsubishi Lancer GS3 1.8 not only brings out a gear in sporty driving dynamics but also many additional convenience and comfort features.

To mention more, the sculpted dashboard and clear instruments look very good and there's also lots of space in the car for both passenger and stuff. It drives well enough,accurate and planted.

The 1.8 litre engine comes with a 5-speed manual gearbox, despite that the motor's 141BHP gives very decent performance - 9.8sec to reach 62mph will be more than rapid for the Lancer's likely conservative clientele.

Because Mitsubishi Lancer GS3 1.8 takes less than 10 seconds to break 62mph. Apart from the newly added bigger alloy wheel, climate control, a bodykit, privacy glass as well as sportier, beefed-up suspension, GS3 includes all the kit from GS2.

It has no unruly behavior if you try the same with the ESP turned off-the cornering line tightens up nicely in response to a lifted throttle. Grip levels are very nice.

Other than it's image as a well-behaved, grown-up chassis, but it's not as lively to drive as the Ford Focus, and refinement over poor road surfaces is also noticeably bad.

The extra kit is certainly very attractive, but what it all does it to push prices up to a probably unattractive level. Just avoid the CVT transmission: it dents performance, fuel economy in addition to refinement.

All in all, Mitsubishi Lancer GS3 1.8 is the cheapest Lancer Sportback with standard climate control and curtain airbags. Both are hugely very welcome in something that could well be in a family car, and that makes this one of favorite versions of Mitsubishi Lancer Evo .
