The All New BMW X1

BMW X1 is the latest compact SUV model from the house of BMW, which will be a value addition to the BMW's SUV lineup that currently comprises of BMW X3, BMW X5 and BMW X6 models. BMW's SUV/SAV models have been gaining growing popularity, but the X3, X5 and X6 models are comparatively larger in size and they were not able to cope up with the current market competition (as there are several smaller yet robust, powerful off-road SUVs on the offer).

The confirmation was made by BMW that the new X1 will hit the roads during the year 2011 and the company released some images of the new X1. North America will get only a 3 liter inline 6 engine same as that of the 328i x Drive sport wagon. The engine, which is naturally aspirated, will produce 231 bhp and has a torque of 199 lb-ft. It has an acceleration time of 6.7 seconds to speed up to 60 mph from a dead-stop.

Surprisingly, the company has not confirmed its plan regarding launch of the new X1 in the American markets, and are currently planning to launch it in the European market first.

Until now BMW has only unveiled the images of its latest compact sport utility dressed in the swirly camouflage.

The specs of the new X1 are also tentative as BMW is yet to give a confirmation on the same, while it has been officially confirmed that the 2010 X1 will hit the market this season for sure.

However, exclusive to the EX-L and Touring versions, the car comes with Honda's Variable Cylinder Management™ (VCM®), which increases fuel economy.

The most impressive of the 2010 Odyssey is by far its Safety features. These key features include, Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control, an Anti-lock braking system, Electronic Brake Distribution, and driver's/front passenger's active head restraints. The car also has a plethora of airbag safety systems like, the dual-stage multiple-threshold front airbags, front side airbags with passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System, and three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensors. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration tested the cars frontal and side impact crash results and in conclusion gave the car 5-star frontal and side ratings.

In 2005, several car manufactures began specializing in the compact sports utility vehicle. Three of the highest rated, most moderately priced SUVs that also have the best fuel economy include the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Rav4 and the Toyota Highlander.

The 2005 Honda CR-V is one of the more fuel-efficient SUVs in its class. It gets a respectable 23 miles per gallon in the city and a very solid 29 mpg on the highway, according to About.com.

The '05 model is equipped with Honda's four-cylinder 2.4-liter engine that is more than capable of competing with various sedans on the highway. With 160-horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, the CR-V is able to outperform most any compact SUV in its class, Edmunds.com reports.

Honda's 2005 CRV comes standard with an "intelligent" variable valve timing system called i-VTEC, which allows the engine to generate plenty of power while maintaining an impressive fuel economy. It offers class-leading interior space, yet drives more like a sedan than a larger family car.

"If you're looking for a reasonably priced, all-purpose vehicle with a sense of adventure and fine foul-weather capability, the CR-V is hard to beat," says the news source.

Just behind the CR-V in terms of fuel economy for a compact SUV is the Toyota Rav4, which gets 23 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. The two-wheel drive, manual transmission model is even more fuel-efficient.

In 2005, the Rav4 was reequipped with a more powerful engine and received significant safety improvements.

The '05 model has a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 161-horsepower and 165 pound-feet of torque. Similar to the CR-V, the Rav4 comes standard with a variable valve timing system that boosts torque at low- and mid-range engine speeds.

Outfitted with four-wheel anti-lock brakes and side airbags for front passengers, outshines its competition in terms of standard safety features. In government crash tests, the Rav4 earned four out of five stars for frontal impact protection and a perfect grade for side impacts, according to Edmunds.

The Rav4 is the first car to win the Best Pick designation for both front and side impact tests.

"Intended for a life on pavement, the RAV4 really shines in this environment, where its taut suspension, quick steering and tight turning radius come together to produce one of the best-handling SUVs we've ever driven," says the news source.

For consumers interested in a mid-size SUV with a strong fuel economy, the 4-cylinder Toyota Highlander may be of interest.

Highlanders are available with a 230-horsepower V6, but the V4 model gets significantly more miles per gallon. City mileage ranges from 18-22 mpg, but the Highlander can get up to 27 mpg on the highway.

It is available with four-wheel-drive and can seat up to seven passengers. The '05 Highlander sits much higher than the Rav4 of CR-V and has considerably more interior space. It costs a bit more than some compact SUVs, but is fairly priced for its size, strong fuel efficiency and smooth ride.

"The Highlander is so darn smooth it encourages the driver to make every trip a pleasure for his or her passengers," says Phillip Powell from About.com.

The 2010 Acura TSX

Acura takes another leap in expanding the TSX label this year by launching it as a wagon in fall of 2010. Just like the previous years, the new TSX will be marketed only in Canada and North America and slowly European markets will be flooded with the new Acura wagon.

The 2010 Acura TSX will also be sold under the Accord Euro label in Australia and New Zealand later on. As far as the standard TSX model is concerned, it will incorporate very few changes in terms of specs and design. Last year, Acura TSX had received a couple of inches increase in its length and 1.3inches in its wheelbase; this year it is not sure as to whether Acura/Honda plans on increasing the dimensions any further.

The current TSX already boasts of being one of the longest cars in the Acura lineup. So, there are good chances that nothing except the wheelbase would change; probably a little increase in overall length may well be on the cards (though there are no indications right now).

As far as the standard features are concerned, there'll be very little change too, though it would be interesting to see how Acura plans on furnishing its wagon; whether all the features will be standard offerings increasing the base price, or only the higher end trims will be costlier, presenting the true capabilities of the TSX. The exact pricing for the wagon model are yet to be officially unveiled by Honda/Acura, and it will be quite interesting to see the response of the customers to the latest offering.

The American Solar Car Story

The purpose of this article is to address the technological innovation brought by the Michigan Solar Car team to the auto industry. This project was successfully tackled by a small group of one hundred Michigan's brightest students and their 300 sponsors.

Recently, I went to the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. It was awesome! So much glamour and so many vehicles to choose from. But, in this article I am not going to talk about the automakers and their vehicles... I will be discussing about one vehicle that was pioneered twenty years ago and had a tremendous response in support from its sponsors and its students from University of Michigan. Yes, it's about the UM school's tenth generation of its solar car named "Infinium". What a remarkable solar vehicle! Its team mission succeeded. The UM Solar Car team won several racing awards in two competitions, national and international.

One of the young team members, a sophomore student told me how proud he was about the entire team accomplishments, a wide array of leading edge technologies and many team innovations.
Solar car racing at Michigan celebrated its 20th year of existence. What an accomplishment!
The solar car team won most of the North American Championship, five out of nine times. At the World Championship contest finished 3rd, three times. That's a great performance.

It all started twenty years ago when a group of Michigan passionate students won the GM Sunrayce. The Sunrunner 1990 solar car took the first place GM Sunrayce and 3rd place World Solar challenge.
The advances in battery technologies used in the solar vehicle had helped the breakthrough in the hybrids. Its carbon fiber composite body shared similar usage on Grand Prix race cars and commercial aircrafts.
Regenerative braking systems had been used since 1989 and implemented in hybrid vehicles since.
Advances in solar cells and collector systems were commonly used in large solar power plants.

The main components of the Michigan solar car were:
• carbon fiber composite body and chassis

• solar cells

• solar collector (concentrator) system

The North American Solar Challenge race was founded by GM in 1989. Its length from start to finish is 2500 miles. The race itinerary starts in Dallas, Texas and ends in Calgary, Alberta. Race results: 5 National Championships.

Michigan Solar Car Team organization is comprised of 4 units: engineering, business, operations and strategy. UM Solar Car team budget expenses of $2,600,000 included the cost of: vehicle, strategy, business, operational and logistics.

Land Rover a Fantastic 4X4 in All Weather

In my life time I have made a few mistakes such as women, jobs and especially with my choice of cars. The first car I ever purchased was a Ford Sierra which I purchased from a friend of mine. At the time everybody I knew owned a Sierra. It was alright for a period of time but it just wasn't the car for me. Anyway, on one snowy and very icy night I crashed it into a tree so maybe I am just annoyed at the car even though it was probably my fault.

Nowadays I drive a second hand Land Rover. In my experience this is a fantastic car to drive in the snow which is very apt considering the weather we are experiencing at the moment. When I crashed the Sierra 20 years ago technology and overall safety of a car was nowhere near as advanced as it is today. I feel safer in a Land Rover mainly due to the fact it is designed to cope with different types of terrain and adverse weather conditions. When I purchased my used Land Rover I couldn't believe how reasonably priced it was especially when I compared it with a new Land Rover.

There are certain problems though with owning a 4x4 vehicle. Firstly the fuel consumption is high which is what you might expect from a car that weighs over one tonne. This is the same though for any larger vehicles currently on the road such as people carriers. Secondly there is the cost of servicing the Land Rover but this is the case for lots of cars under a certain age. As the car is heavy it can be sluggish to get up to speed and move off the lights particularly because it is a diesel.

I did look at a few other vehicles before deciding upon a second hand Land Rover. I really liked the Chrysler Jeep Cherokee. The 4x4 certainly looked the part with its beefed up wheels and bodywork. However the driving performance was not to my style in some ways it felt heavier than the Land Rover. I also tried out the Toyota RAV4 because I have always had a soft spot for Toyota because in my experience they have been reliable and easy to drive. However the price of a second hand RAV4 that I test drove was out of my league in terms of finance which was a shame because I really enjoyed driving it.

So far I feel that I have made the right decision to purchase a Used Land Rover. But I will probably buy a different 4x4 vehicle in the next few years. Who knows perhaps I will purchase a second hand Cherokee.

There is a new electric car being displayed at the Detroit Car Show 2010. It is the Tango Electric Car made by a company out of Washington called "Commuter Cars". While there seems to be a flood of new electric cars, this one is definitely different. It is a 2 seater car with the seats behind each other and not next to each other. Think Honda Goldwing Motorcycle size when thinking about the Tango.

The next surprising thing is the performance of this car. It comes with 2 electric engines and can go faster than 130 mp/h easily. At least that is what the manufacturer is telling about the Tango. This electric vehicle weighs in at about 1 ton and according to Rick Woodbury, the designer of the car, it has better road maneuvering than a regular sports car.

And since the Tango car is so small and thin, can you imagine how many of those you can fit into a standard 2-car garage? This car is approx. as long as my current pickup truck (Ford F-150) is wide. Christmas at the mall would be interesting because it should be easy to find a parking spot for this vehicle. However, I am not sure how you would transport any Christmas presents as this car does not have any real storage areas.

Do not get too excited, this car is hard to get. For one there is the big ticket price tag of roughly $150,000. And second it takes about 1 month to have one of those electric cars build. But if you manage to a) have enough money to buy one and b) the patience to wait for it to be build, at least then you would drive the same car as George Clooney. I guess ever since George Clooney was seen driving a Toyota Prius, he got a first shot at every other electric vehicle. Rumors have it that he also owns one of the few Tesla Roadster's. The Tesla Roadster is a 100% electric sports car and one of the most visible projects in this field.

Power for the two cars will come from two very different engines. The sedan, on the other hand, will be driven a 1.5-litre petrol engine with over 100 bhp.

The two cars will be rolling out of Toyota's new plant that has a capacity of over 100,000 cars a year. The Etios sedan will roll out by October 2010 and the Etios compact car is expected in January 2011.

1959 Silver Wraith Rolls With Celebrity History

During that time, the car appeared in Newport, RI in the 1994 movie, True Lies, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis. The 2010 GMC Yukon

The Yukon is a large affordable SUV, which is produced and sold by General Motors. The Yukon is very similar to the Chevrolet Tahoe, which is also sold and manufactured by General Motors.

The full size SUV comes with various trim levels and a few different engine options. The first option for the Yukon, which comes standard with the SLE and SLT trims, is a 4.8 liter eight cylinder engine. This choice gets about 295 horsepower and 305 pound feet of torque. It is widely perceived that the smallest engine option is not sufficient for many drivers.

The next available engine, which comes standard with the 2010 XL, is a 5.3 liter eight cylinder. The Vortec 5300 V8 engine produces 320 horsepower and 340 pound feet of torque.

The last option for the 2010 series is a 6.2 liter eight cylinder engine. This Vortec 6200 V8 engine comes standard in the 2010 Denali and produces 403 horsepower and 417 pound feet of torque.

To help with fuel efficiency, General Motors installed an Active Fuel Management system which shuts off four of the eight engine cylinders when they are not needed (such as when the driver is cruising or idling). This has helped with fuel efficiency as the base model can now get 22 miles per gallon on the highway, compared to last year's model which got only 19.

The SLE and SLT trim levels come standard with two wheel drive, but can be upgraded to all wheel drive. The XL and Yukon trim levels come standard with all wheel drive. Another improvement over previous year's models is the introduction of a six speed automatic transmission. This transmission is an upgrade over last year's four speed transmission.

The 1970 Dodge Charger is remembered by some as the last year of the second generation charger but most remember it as the car that Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) raced at the end of The Fast and The Furious.

Even when the Charger first came out in 1970, there were some changes to it that differed from its previous models. The charger increased in size by one inch. Some of the changes included a large wrap around chrome bumper and grill that was not split down the middle. There were new rear facing scoops with the R/T logo that were mounted on the front doors, door scallops. Other new accessories are Hemi hood cutout, electric headlight doors and actual lights that replace side markers. The biggest change for the dodge was the new engine. It was a very extreme setup with the four hundred and forty Six Pack. The four hundred and forty Six Pack has two three barrel carburetors with three hundred and ninety horse power. Also single carter four- barrel carb was used on these models. There was a two hundred and sixty eight degree intake duration and two hundred and eighty four degree exhaust duration; also the cam timing was identical to the Hemi.

The federally mandated ignition switch buzzer that reminds drivers not to leave their keys in the car was first placed in the 1970 Charger. The interior came with many changes as well. There were high back bucket seats and the door panels were revised. Map pockets were made optional and the ignition was repositioned in the steering column instead of in the dash.

The 1970 dodge charger first came out in many different high impact colors and they were names given with each color. Some of the nick names for the brightly colored dodge were Top Banana, Plum Crazy, Panther Pink, Statutory Grape, Go Mango, Sublime, and Burnt Orange.

To film The Fast and The Furious movies there had to be six Chargers built. 1970 Dodge Chargers have become very rare and expensive so it was costly having to rebuild the chargers through all four movies and now there are only three that have lasted and were placed in storage.

The engines consisted of Supercharged Chrysler four hundred and twenty six Hemi V-8 with a BDS Blower Intake, BDS Electronic Fuel Injection, and BDS 9-71 Roots style blower. The wheels were Coy's C-5 with 18 by 8.0 inches for front wheels and 18 by 9.5 inches for rear wheels. The tires were Continental Sport Contact with the Front size being 225/ 45R18 and the rear size 285/ 50R18. Famous Buddy Baker and the 1970 Dodge Charger made history by clocking faster than two hundred miles per hour for a lap on a closed course at the Talladega Speedway.

The Tango Electric Car

There is a new electric car being displayed at the Detroit Car Show 2010. It is the Tango Electric Car made by a company out of Washington called "Commuter Cars". While there seems to be a flood of new electric cars, this one is definitely different. It is a 2 seater car with the seats behind each other and not next to each other. Think Honda Goldwing Motorcycle size when thinking about the Tango.

The next surprising thing is the performance of this car. It comes with 2 electric engines and can go faster than 130 mp/h easily. At least that is what the manufacturer is telling about the Tango. This electric vehicle weighs in at about 1 ton and according to Rick Woodbury, the designer of the car, it has better road maneuvering than a regular sports car.

And since the Tango car is so small and thin, can you imagine how many of those you can fit into a standard 2-car garage? This car is approx. as long as my current pickup truck (Ford F-150) is wide. Christmas at the mall would be interesting because it should be easy to find a parking spot for this vehicle. However, I am not sure how you would transport any Christmas presents as this car does not have any real storage areas.

Do not get too excited, this car is hard to get. For one there is the big ticket price tag of roughly $150,000. And second it takes about 1 month to have one of those electric cars build. But if you manage to a) have enough money to buy one and b) the patience to wait for it to be build, at least then you would drive the same car as George Clooney. I guess ever since George Clooney was seen driving a Toyota Prius, he got a first shot at every other electric vehicle. Rumors have it that he also owns one of the few Tesla Roadster's. The Tesla Roadster is a 100% electric sports car and one of the most visible projects in this field.

Buyers now had options to choose from, regardless of what manufacturer they preferred, or the price tag they were looking for. Now there will always be the option of a high end luxury vehicle that boasts a convertible top and increased horsepower and a traditional convertible sports car that offers all the speed and agility of their Porsche counterparts.
