Exotic Classic Sports Cars the Lamborghini Diablo

The name is pure magic. Few cars are sexier than a Lamborghini. Even the Batman drove one, the Murcielago LP640 Coupe, in the Dark Knight. The purr of the engine was unmistakable, as it tore through the streets of Gotham City. Of course, it was a convertible and, of course, Bruce Wayne had two beautiful women with him. With an exotic sports car like this, would we expect anything less?

It is somewhat amusing to consider that Lamborghini was a little tractor company that grew to become a leader in world class super cars. In its day, Lamborghini's tractor business was producing 1000 tractors a year. Their distinctive black and white Trattori could be found all over Italy. Ferruccio Lamborghini did not like the post WWll cars that car maker Ferrari was building. He thought they lacked the creature comforts and appointments that befitted a Grand Touring automobile. After he was snubbed when he visited the Ferrari factory, he decided to build his own cars. As they say, the rest is history.

Lamborghini had a tradition of naming the cars after famous fighting bulls. The Murcielago, according to Lamborghini, "refers to a 19th-century Spanish bull that earned fame through its courageous nature in a bullfight" (Lamborghini). The Diablo, the Devil, which was Ferruccio replacement for the early Countach, was also named for a famous bull. According to THE MOST CHARISMATIC CARS from 80' to present, this bull in particular was raised by the 19th century Duke of Veragua and was made famous for "fighting an epic battle with 'El Chicorro' in Madrid on July 11. 1869".

Regardless, the Lamborghini makes a strong impression. The look is as unmistakable as the sound of the engine. Hollywood is drawn to the design, often featuring the Lamborghini, knowing that doing so will draw attention. There are other exotic sports cars, but few have the appeal of the Lamborghini.

The exclusivity of the Lamborghini is part of the appeal. Oftentimes, production of certain models was so limited that only a few of each model were made. For instance, only 138 Diablo SE30 were made in 1994 as a celebration of Ferrucci's business. Lest one should think that 138 is quite few, try again. Only one Roadster Prototipo was made in 1992. The point is that these are not production line cars, cranked out by the thousands. Exclusivity is inherent in the production.

Then too is the raw power of the Lamborghini. With a maximum top speed of 315 miles per hour, they were designed as racing cars and even the police in Italy drive them, as speed limits in Europe are still largely unregulated on the freeways, not that speed limits in general seem to matter much in Italy.

The Lamborghini Murcielago LP640

Do you love Super Cars? Well if you do then you just have to check out the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640! This Awesome new Lamborghini can really Rock and Roll! With two different body choices available. You can choose between a standard coupe or a convertible roadster. Although the roadster is not really a convertible, it is more like a targa top.

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Coupe -

The standard Murcielago LP640 coupe comes with the standard 6.5 liter V12 that pumps out an amazing 632 horsepower and a stum pulling 660 foot pounds of tourqe. To be able to put all that power to the ground takes one heck of a drivetrain.

When you buy the standard coupe you have the choice between the paddle shifted 6 speed e-gear automated clutch manual transmission or the standard Lamborghini 6 speed manual transmission with a gated metal shifter. Also standard on the MurciƩlago LP640 coupe is all wheel drive, along with front, center, and rear limited slip differentials.

So what does this all meen? It meens 0 to 60 times in the low to mid 3 second range, and a Super Car top speed of 211 miles per hour!

Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster -

The Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster is for the person who has money to burn and wants to feel the wind blowing through their hair at speeds in excess of 200 miles per hour. When you decide to buy the Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster it tacks on an additional $33,000 onto the base price of the standard Murcielago LP640 Coupe. Then if you figure in options, and let me tell you there are a lot of options available. It is very easy to drop another $60,000 or more before you walk out the dealers door!

really is not much different than the standard coupe. It looks pretty much the same. It even has the wonderful head turning scissor doors, but there are a few minor differences. There are additional cooling vents behind the air intakes, and a retractable canvas roof are the main differences. Performance is fairly comparable with the standard coupe. The canvas roof panel is only meant for driving around at normal speeds, and should never be installed when you want to do those high speed runs down the road. It is just made of thin canvas and the back pressure from high speeds has the possibility of sucking off the car.

Overall I don't think it matters whether you pick the coupe or the roadster. Any Super Car that is capable of going 211 miles an hours is a winner in my book!

Why the Rich and Famous Drive Lamborghinis?

When you see a Lamborghini on the streets, your first reaction is usually to take a closer look at the car. Your second reaction is usually to take a closer look at the driver. You want to know who's driving it. Is it a wealthy business person? Is it a rich lotto winner? Even better, is it somebody that's rich and famous? That brings me to my real question - Why do the rich and famous drive Lamborghinis?

OK, that's not fair because not all rich and famous people drive Lamborghinis. Some of them do, though. For example, Jay Leno has one in his fleet. So does Nicholas Cage. Chris Mills (NBA player) does too. That's just to name a few.

Then why do some rich and famous people drive the car? I honestly don't know. That's because I would never drive one, no matter how rich I ever get to be. I've sat in one before and, let me tell you, they are not comfortable. It feels like your sitting in a coffin. There's not much room in there. Maybe they drive the car because they like the exhilaration of driving fast - They are fast cars, you know? That's a possibility.

But perhaps some rich and famous people drive Lamborghinis because they want to be noticed. Perhaps they just want people to stare at them in awe. That could be a possibility. After all, a lot of these people have big egos.

How about you - Would you ever drive a Lamborghini? If so, ask yourself why and maybe that's why celebrities drive them as well.

Did you know that most of these lotto winners could afford to buy a Lamborghini? Yet, very few of them, if any, actually did buy one.

The Car BMW and Lamborghini Built?

What if you took two companies that had contrasting, unique strengths with cars and put them together to build a car emphasizing both of their traits? Well, that's exactly what happened in the 1970s when BMW and Lamborghini got together to build a legendary car - the BMW M1.

The BMW M1 was a car built in a soap opera environment of sorts. The problem wasn't BMW, but Lamborghini. BMW had retained the Italian exotic sports car company to design the M1. Alas, Lamborghini was having major financial problems at the time and ended up going bankrupt half way through the project. BMW was thus forced to take the car back and complete the project on its own.

These odd circumstances led to an odd car. The first M1s look more or less exactly like you might think they would if Lamborghini did half the work and then handed the car off to BMW and did not consult on the rest of the project. The car has some of the swooping designs you see with all Lamborghinis, but also some of the typical lines you see in BMW. Put together, the car looks something like...a DeLorean. To some, this is a beautiful design. To others, it is not.

The BMW M1 was sold to the public for only three years - 1978-81. The sales for this period totaled 456 cars, the smallest production line in the history of BMW. Oddly, the base engine was a 6 cylinder, with twin cams and produced a top speed in the 160 miles per hour range. Other BMW models were later given the M1 version, but they were just upgrades of the respective base production cars and not real M1s.

It must be said that the powers at BMW really liked the M1. They actually started a PRO M1 racing series that restricted teams to using just the M1 car. The series became a launching pad for Formula One drivers. The iconic Ferrari driver Niki Lauda won two PRO M1 championships and future F1 Champ Nelson Piquet won one. BMW still supports the series today although M1s long ago were phased out in exchange for 3 series cars.

Why write about a car nearly 30 years old? Well, BMW is considering updating the car and releasing a modern version. It is called the M1 Homage Concept. The car has only been seen once, but it just looks brutally wicked in a good way. The current economic environment has stopped BMW and other companies from pursuing such projects, but expect the car to get some attention when the economic situation improves. I honestly don't care for the original M1 design, but the Homage Concept looks like an absolutely beautiful and aggressive car design worth every penny of what will certainly be a very high price.
