The AC Cobra 427


In the mid 1960's, AC Cobra 427 captured the heart and imagination of the world. It happened because Cobra had been following the recipe for the performance car to be successful.

The recipe was simply squeezing the biggest and most powerful engine into a small frame that could carry out the power. The makers of Cobra also made it come with an elegant design and attractive body with a car roof that can be opened to make your cruise more fun.

The AC caught everybody's attention in 1953 at London Motor Show. The fact that it was one of post war sport cars in Britain with supporting chassis and attractive body made it much admired by everyone.

In 1962, Carol Shelby was impressed by AC's performance and saw a potential in it, so that he talked AC to fit the Ford V-8 engine into the AC body. Fitting the 260 Cu in 4.4 lt lightweight engine was no problem at all, but the makers found difficulty in doubling up power output.

Later on, Shelby put a Ford 7-liter engine and revamped the chassis and suspension. The 4.7 version in 1964 is based on the this version. Cobra then won its first championship on the race track in 1965. The AC Cobra did not join international racing, but it was successful in American SCCA events. Shelby had found the very car that can beat Chevrolet Corvette.

It has been said as a rumor that Cobra was the reason of national speed limit regulation in UK. It was known that in 1964, Jack Sears and Peter Bolton reached 185 mph while testing Cobra on the M1 motorway in anticipation of 24th Le Mans race. However, the officials from UK denied this rumor, claiming that the main reason they created the regulation to limit the speed in highway is because of increasing death rate.

Cobra was by far the most perfect sport car ever made. It was fast with an immortal elegance despite its lacking in comfort features. These features made Cobra the best car ever.

The 2010 Acura Alms


The 2010 Acura Alms is getting ready for the most awaiting ALM series. Living with a BMW


I spent three years driving a 1997 Dodge Stratus. This was not a bad car by any means especially for a kid. But when it was time for my sister to get the car, I needed a new one. After many hours spent on the internet I figured I would go with a Civic until my Dad said what about this? It was a 1999 BMW 328i 5 speed. After doing some research and finding out this car had a good price, and even cheaper than a 2003 Civic, it ended up in my driveway.

After having it for over two years I still love it. It is ten years old so there are some problems such as a slow window motor, and a wheel bearing going bad, but any car will have problems as it ages. I am still just as excited as I am the first day I bought it. Sometimes the highlight of my day is driving it.

I would say that it is the perfect balance for a daily driver. It gets about 28 mpg but still has enough power to have some fun. It has many luxury features that cheaper cars do not have such as heated leather seats, power everything, 10 speaker audio system, climate control, etc. It also takes corners with ease and still has a smooth comfortable ride. It is also a German engineered car, so it will last forever. After having the car for a year and also working at a dealership, allowing myself to drive many other BMWs old and new, I became very loyal.

I like the products BMW has to offer and I know my next car will be a BMW. I have talked to a few customers that feel the same way and even when they do have problems, they still said they would buy another one. A BMW is such a satisfying car that it is hard to make an owner so unhappy that they will never buy another one.

Just about whatever type of vehicle you need BMW has a solution, small to large sedans, SUVs, Sports cars, coupes, and roadsters. If you want your driving pleasure to be enhanced, I would highly recommend checking a BMW new or used, you won't be disappointed.

The 2003 BMW Z8 was a concept car manufactured by German automaker, BMW, during the period 2000 to 2003. This model was the production version of Z07 model. Ford to Sell Volvo?


Ford has been focusing on selling the Volvo name plate as it has been a money loosing venture for them for a while now. They are currently negotiating with U.S. based bidders and are working towards narrowing the talks down to one potential buyer. The Crown Group, which is headed by Michael Dingman, a former Ford director (from 1981 to 2002), his son James Dingman and Shamel Rushwin, who is a former manufacturing and labor executive for the automaker, is currently a front runner to the purchase of Volvo. Ford has succeeded in being the only major U. S. auto manufacturer that has avoided bankruptcy. They are working on making themselves leaner by shedding the international luxury lines in order to focus on its own name badge products, believing it will again become profitable by 2011.

Crown, who entered into negotiations with Ford about two months ago, has offered less than the two billion Geely Holding Group Co, offered. Volvo has not lost favor as a brand, it still has its loyalists and still has a good name, sales have just stalled. This company can and will succeed if it is purchased by a company that allows the people that know Volvo the best to do what they do best. Crown is working towards that goal by trying to attract former Volvo executives as equity partners. Those being sought after include Roger Holtback, who was chief executive officer of the Swedish auto manufacturer in the lat 1980s.

Ford is hoping to finish negotiations and conclude a successful sale during this quarter. They may be narrowing the list of bidders down to one in just a couple of weeks. Geely is currently China's biggest private automaker and they are currently the most likely successful bidder in a bidding war that started more than a year ago. Everyone in Ford, Crown and Geely are being hush hush about the progress of negotiations and which way they might go. Ford will continue to be the supplier of engines and other components for Volvo is working the protection of its intellectual property into the negotiations.

Ford needs to be very careful about intellectual property but that is pretty difficult. It is possible to be so closed mouth about intellectual property that you end up damaging the product and damaging the relationships with the auto makers who take over the Volvo nameplate. Still in negotiation are the responsibilities of liabilities such as pensions. Ford is looking to sell Volvo for approximately 2 billion dollars. This less than a third of what the automaker paid for the nameplate ten years ago. Ford had a 'pre-tax' loss of 231 million in the second quarter compared with 120 million lost in the full year prior.

Investors seem to be happy about Ford's decision, as the Ford stocks rose .21 cents to $7.05 in composite trading on the New York Stock Exchange. I'm sure we'll see some upcoming changes in Volvo after the new ownership takes over and starts investing moneys and ideas in this old standard.

Lexus is a luxury car, brand name owned by Toyota, the Japanese automobile manufacturers. These cars are popular for their elegance, sophistication and superb road performance. They are sold all over the world in around seventy countries.

The Z06 Corvette History


In 1953 legionary engineer Zora Duntov joins GM, and goes to work on pushing for greater power for the Corvette. At the same time Duntov was always working GM to continue development of parts for Corvettes that would benefit the racing community of Corvette owners. This later launched the name "Z06" which stood for higher performance equipment package.

In 1963 the first Z06 Corvette package offered 36.5 gallon gas tanks, vacuum brake booster, dual master cylinder, a 20 percent larger diameter front sway bar, sintered metallic brake linings within power assisted Al-Fin drums that were cooled by front air scoops along with vented backing plates to help keep the brakes operating cooler. The Z06 package also included shocks and springs that were just about twice as stiff as the standard Corvette had.

The nick name these Z06 Corvettes were give was "Big Tanks" because as previously mentioned these had a 36.5 gallon gas tanks, compared to the standard tanks that were only 20 gallon. In the beginning this package was only available to the coupes because the large gas tank wouldn't fit in the convertibles.

At the time the only Z06 Corvette engine option was a L84 360 horsepower 327 cubic inch displacement engine that had a Rochester fuel injection system on it. Seeing that the Sports Car Club of America production classes required factory exhaust manifolds, the engine was rated at 360 horse power from GM.

During this time, a standard base Corvette coupe would run you around $4,252, if you wanted the Z06 package you would pay and additional $1,818.45. Some time later GM removed the larger 36.5 gallon tank from the Z06 package and lowered the package price. Although the larger 36.5 gallon tank would still be available as a stand alone upgrade if you wanted it. The use of this tank was mainly for longer races. Leaving the general racer and public happy with the standard fuel tank. At this time also because the standard Z06 performance package now didn't have the larger gas tank, GM started producing Z06 as a convertible option also. There were 199 of these Z06s that were made of which only 63 had the 36.5 gallon gas tank and 124 of those weren't ordered with a radio. Showing that many of these Z06's were used as recreational sports cars.

In October of 1962 during the LA Times Three Hour Invitational the Z06 Corvette performed incredibly. At the end the winner of the race was won by Mickey Thompson's Corvette that had been driven by Doug Hooper. Not to long after this after Ford broke the ban that had been on racing, GM launched a 427 cubic inch displacement engine that had the nick name "mystery motor". This big block V8 was revealed at the January 1963 Daytona 500 stock car race. Behind the scene Duntov had been working on the new Stingray prototype that would be called by the racing community "Grand Sport". The whole idea behind the Grand Sport was that these cars would be the Corvette that would be seen racing against the worlds top prototypes, while the Z06 would stick around and race against other production cars. Then after the Z06, the Corvette picked up the racing designation "ZR-1" which stood for "Zora's Racers".

It wasn't till the year 2000 that GM brought back the Z06 name into one of three packages offered for the Corvette. These models were released as 2001's with a LS6 motor pushing out 385 horsepower, this was a increase of 35 horsepower from what the base Corvettes came with their 350 horsepower LS1 engine. Then in 2002 the Z06 was motor was modified by removing two of the precatalytic converters in the exhaust system, hi-lift camshafts had been installed, lighter valve gear, and improved induction system. After all of this in 2006 GM releases an even more power Z06 which had a 7.0liter 427 cubic inch displacement engine putting out 505 horsepower.

The 2009 Hyundai Genesis


In modern day parlance, when the Hyundai Genesis premiered at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, it virtually rocked the house. The world had never seen a Hyundai like this before. For the first time in the brand's budget-car history, Hyundai was not taking on the big guns, and were a little smitten about it, because the Genesis was ready to compete on a global scale with the top luxury models, at a fraction of their cost.

Ever since the South Korean automaker arrived in the U.S. market, back in 1986, it's emphasized value. Hyundai typically promised features and capabilities similar to those of major competitors, but at a significantly lower price. Now that Hyundai is moving boldly upmarket, past the current Azera sedan, value is still a drawing card. Like other Hyundai models, the Genesis is available at what the company calls "a much more accessible price point" than the European/Asian competition.

Two powertrains are offered: a Lambda 3.8-liter V-6 and an all-new Tau 4.6-liter V-8. Working with continuously variable valve timing, the V-6 makes 290 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. Running on premium fuel, Hyundai's new V-8 produces 375 horsepower, along with 333 pound-feet. With regular-grade gasoline, the V-8 makes 368 hp and 324 pound-feet. An Aisin six-speed Shiftronic automatic transmission mates with the V-6 engine, while the V-8 gets a ZF six-speed automatic with Shiftronic manual control. Hyundai states the V-8 model can accelerate to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Fuel economy depends upon the powertrain. The V-6 engine gets an EPA estimate of 18 mpg in city driving and 27 mpg on the highway. Figures for the V-8 drop to 17/25 mpg.

Hyundai states the Genesis has a larger cabin than the 5 Series or E-Class, but lower body structure weight. Genesis also promises more interior volume than BMW's 7 Series. Built on a 115.6-inch wheelbase, the Genesis sedan measures 195.9 inches long overall and stands 58.3 inches tall. Each dimension falls right in the middle of the competition, according to Hyundai. Trunk volume totals 15.9 cubic feet.

The Genesis suspension includes Amplitude Selective Dampers. Seldom shy about comparisons to premium motorcars, Hyundai says that technology also is used for Lexus, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz models. Like most Hyundai models, the Genesis has standard Electronic Stability Control. An eight-airbag complement includes front and rear seat-mounted side-impact airbags, plus roof-mounted side curtain airbags for all outboard occupants. Each Genesis halts with all-disc antilock brakes. Alloy wheels hold standard 17-inch tires with the V-6 engine, 18-inch for the V-8.

Inside, the soft-touch instrument panel contains woodgrain accents. Heated front seats have leather seating surfaces and electronic active head restraints. Lexicon audio systems are available. Bluetooth hands-free mobile phone connectivity, XM satellite radio, and USB/iPod auxiliary inputs are provided in each model. A power rear sunshade, rain-sensing wipers, automatic windshield defogger, and a memory system are included with the Genesis V-8. Available at extra cost are such features as XM NavTraffic, xenon high-intensity-discharge headlights with an Adaptive Front Lighting System, and a cooled driver's seat.

Prices start at $33,000 (including destination charge) for the Genesis V-6, escalating to $38,000 for the V-8 model. Options include a navigation system with an 8-inch display screen, plus a backup camera that uses the same screen to show a view behind the car. Eight ultrasonic sensors on front and rear bumpers work with the available rear backup camera to detect the proximity of objects while parking.

Expect a smooth ride on nice pavement, and acceptable comfort on some rougher stuff. But certain undulating surfaces can yield considerable body motion. Steering feels somewhat light but is reasonably precise, with just a hint of reduced confidence in the occasional fast curve. Easy to drive, the Genesis generally tracks neatly and stays put in its lane. Seats are quite comfortably cushioned and snugly bolstered, providing great back and thigh support. Front headroom is ample, leg space adequate, and elbowroom only slightly restricted.

Tested on a racetrack, the V-6 reacted well, but the V-8 is obviously superior for all-out performance - though hardly essential for most drivers. Resounding response yields plenty of passing power, and Hyundai's V-8 is at least as quiet as the V-6. Brakes are stronger with the V-8, but their effect might not be noticed in every day driving. On the road, the V-8 sedan feels a bit smoother and better balanced, despite less-ideal weight distribution.

The 2009 Subaru Forester


Built on a new chassis, the 2009 Subaru Forester gets a fresh appearance, edging away from the prior design. To improve its center of gravity, the engine sits 0.4 inch lower. Track-width dimensions have increased, which may improve stability a bit. Front doors open wider, and pillars have been modified. Back doors now open almost 90 degrees. Rear frame height now matches that of an ordinary sedan. Subaru claims more usable cargo space than its main rivals, though actual volume has not grown.

"Where it's bigger is where it matters," said corporate communications director Michael McHale. Rear occupants also get 2 more inches of shoulder room, while front riders gain 2.6 inches.

A new double-wishbone rear suspension, mounted on a subframe, bumps up the cargo space as well as potentially improving ride quality. The hood on turbo-engine models has a more integrated, less extreme air-intake hump.

Every Subaru has all-wheel drive, but the one that mates with the turbo engine is more sophisticated in the way it apportions torque to the wheels. Foresters can tow up to 2,400 pounds. Ground clearance is 8.9 inches with the turbo engine (8.7 in regular form). Most models now ride on 17-inch wheels.

An altogether enjoyable vehicle, the Forester proved its off-the-pavement capabilities during an arduous drive through the wilds of California's Catalina Island. Even in the most challenging spots, the Forester demonstrated its prowess with ease. Though it coped well with severe bumps and holes, some unpleasant sounds occasionally emanated from down below.

Acceleration is modest in 170-hp form, and the turbo model isn't exactly stirring, either. It also suffers some turbo lag when pushed hard. Even so, performance is more than adequate for a compact crossover/SUV. Automatic-transmission operation is hardly discernible, but Subaru's manual gearbox is not the greatest.

Expect excellent ride quality, as the compliant suspension absorbs nearly all commotion. Even on rough dirt roads, the Forester only occasionally penalizes occupants significantly. Foresters are highly maneuverable, too, and mostly quiet though the rather high-revving non-turbo engine is heard frequently.

Front seats are roomy, comfortable, and inviting. Rear leg and foot room qualify as shockingly spacious, even with front seats pushed fairly far back. A large speedometer is easy enough to read, but a little "busy" looking. Subaru Foresters are "known for superior visibility," McHale said, and the 2009 model demonstrates that trait well. Views all around are undisturbed.

2009 Subaru Forester's starting price, for the base 2.5X model with a manual transmission, is $19,995 (plus $665 destination charge). That's $1,200 lower than the price of the least-costly 2008 Forester. For 2009, too, Subaru has made Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and curtain-type airbags with rollover sensing standard in every model. VDC is Subaru's version of stability control. Front active head restraints also are standard.

So, is it a crossover or an SUV? "Crossover SUV" is the latest term, said communications director McHale. "Consumers like to think they're buying SUVs."
